As a summer custom, you may have seen it because it still goes on, the custom of “Afanistis”, on the 23rd of June.  They light fires and they jump over them.  This took place in each neighbourhood on the eve of St. John ‘Afanistis’.  Because he got his name of course from the ancient word “Afi” which means lighting.  But later the people who didn’t know said that he got his name from the ‘Afanes”.  “Afanes” is what certain bushes are called when they dry up in the winter and we take them and light them on fire.  And we light fires with them. And they said then “Ah! That is where he got his name from”.
